Changes to the General Skilled Migration (GSM) points test have made it easier for applicants with higher degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and information and communication technology to attain Australian permanent residency. The changes came into effect on 10 September 2016.
The GSM points test applies to applications for permanent visas of Subclass 189 (Skilled – Independent), Subclass 190 (Skilled – Nominated) and Subclass 489 (Skilled – Regional (Provisional)).
The new changes mean five extra points will be awarded to applicants who have achieved Australian higher degrees in fields where shortages have been identified in Australia. Defined by the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS), these fields currently include:
