Parent Visas

These visas are for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens who meet the "Balance of Family Test". To pass the Balance of Family Test at least half of the parent's children must live in Australia or more children must live in Australia than any other single country. 

The applicant must:

  • be sponsored by a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible NZ citizen, or community organization;
  • be the sponsor's natural parent, step-parent or parent by adoption (as long as adoption occurred before the child turned 18);
  • pass the 'balance of family' test;
  • if you are applying for any parent visa that has the word 'aged', you must be an Aged Parent (male 65, female 60-65);
  • meet health, character, other public interest and special return requirements;
  • pay a first application charge;
  • pay a second application charge (health service charge)

The sponsor must:

  • be approved as a sponsor;
  • usually be 18 or over (However, younger children may be able to get a close relative, guardian or communication to sponsor on their behalf);
  • be the natural child, step-child or adopted child of the applicant or be the spouse of such a child;
  • be 'settled' in Australia (be lawfully in Australia for 2 years);
  • arrange an Assurance of Support (AoS);
  • arrange payment for a refundable Social Security Bond (AoS);

Settled - lawful resident in Australia (not necessarily as PR or citizens).

Balance of Family Test - at least half or more children live in Australia than any other single country.
