Australian citizenship

We can walk you through the process of becoming an Australian citizen, step by step.
Basic requirements

To apply for citizenship, you must:

  • be a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen when you apply and at the time your application is decided on
  • be in Australia when your application is decided on
  • have spent a sufficient length of time in Australia
  • sit a citizenship test
  • intend to live in Australia or maintain a lasting link with Australia while overseas

Generally, a permanent resident is a non-citizen who holds an Australian permanent visa.

Slightly different criteria apply to applicants aged 60 years or over.
