New India and UK trade agreements promise benefits for employers and skilled workers

Two international trade agreements – the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (AUKFTA) and the India Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (IAECTA) – passed the Australian Senate this week.

Australian, United Kingdom and Indian nationals and employers stand to benefit greatly from new immigration and visa concessions. We’ve previously reported on the AUKFTA in detail. Expected key benefits include:

Benefits under the Australia-UK agreement

  • Exemptions to labour market testing; that is, Australian employers will be able to sponsor UK and Indian employees without undergoing the usual mandatory labour market testing requirements.

  • Employers won’t be restricted to only hiring workers with occupations on the Skilled Occupation List; the types of positions they can sponsor will be greatly expanded.

Benefits under the India-Australia agreement

  • Employers will be able to hire young Indian nationals under the Working Holiday program, with 1000 new Working Holiday Maker visas made available.

General benefits

  • Employers will have a larger pool of qualified applicants to choose from.
  • Professionals wanting to work in each other’s territory will have their qualifications recognised without having to go through unnecessary cost and bureaucracy.
  • Expanded work rights for post-study graduates.


    The trade agreements will allow employers, skilled workers, and students to take advantage of eased restrictions on mobility and visa requirements, opening pathways to new job opportunities and talent acquisition.

    Note: The trade agreements must be ratified by each country before they come into effect. The commencement of operation of the agreements will be confirmed at a later date.
